Subject: SCIS 2011-12 Program Assessment From: Mark Allen Weiss Date: 9/6/2011 2:19 PM To: faculty@cs.fiu.edu CC: Norman Munroe Dear colleagues, As you all know, the School of Computing and Information Sciences systematically evaluates its BS in CS program. This program assessment is used to identify ways to improve the quality of the program and to implement appropriate changes to the program. The Subject Area Coordinators in consultation with the faculty and the SCIS Assessment Director will review the subject areas and propose changes, if any, to the undergraduate committee in this assessment cycle. This year Professor Pestaina will be the SCIS Assessment Director. Some subject areas have been slightly revised from previous years. In prior years, these reports were due in January, and based on data collected in Spring, Summer, and Fall of the prior year. This timeline made it impossible to consider changes by Bulletin #5, which is the latest allowable for changes to take effect in the following Fall semester. Consequently, changes were implemented in the assessment cycle last year. As a result of these changes, the last semester considered in the cycle will be the Spring semester; hence this year's cycle will consider data from Spring 2010, Summer 2010, Fall 2010, and Spring 2011. Second, although area coordinators will examine data yearly, a full report will only be done every two years. An interim emergency report can be filed with the Associate Director should an area coordinator find cause in the off-year. Finally, the biennial assessment report will include results of Direct Assessments conducted in senior projects and ethics, as well as embedded questions done in COP-3530, COP-4555, COP-4710 (formerly COP-4540), MAD-3512, and portfolio evaluation in COP-4338, COP-4610, and possibly COP-3530. These changes will provide ample time for catalog changes to be submitted in March, in time for Bulletin #5. Below is the list of our subject areas and their respective coordinators for the B.S. in Computer Science. The B.S. in Information Technology assessments will also be done on two-year cycles, starting last year. Hence those reports will be done in 2012-2013.
